depictr - an experimental mashup for visualising lyrics
depictr matched song lyrics with Flickr photos. I developed it back in 2006.
If you're still interested, here's what it did. You typed some words into a box and a mosaic of photos appeared, overlaid with snippets from the song.
It worked by filtering out noise words, passing them to the Yahoo Terms Extraction service to find words and phrases, and used these as tags to find related photos via the Flickr API.
People seemed to enjoy playing with it, and it got lots of mentions in blogs all over the place. It was Editor's Pick on some Yahoo thing.
My ambitious next step was going to be to use a copy of WordNet to search for synonyms and related words, try to get some understanding of the semantics from the lyrics, and find photos that were related in a more meaningful way.
